DAY 2 – Canberra Floriade

Today is festival day! Following breakfast we depart to Canberra and the Commonwealth Park, which is the centre of the Floriade Festival. The flower display is the largest of its type in the southern hemisphere. There are some 150,000 annuals, 65,000 tulips, 20,000 daffodils, 9,000 each of hyacinths and ranunculus and 200,000 muscari – an abundance of bloom and colour! We spend the morning here with free time to wander around at our leisure and to purchase lunch if you wish. This afternoon we visit Cockington Green. This award winning attraction takes its name from the township of Cockington in Devon, an historic English Village, and is a one 12th scale reproduction of buildings and gardens in this English village – thatched cottages, a tiny church, the village green, an oats house in Kent, a riverside inn, castles and even Stonehenge. Following a wonderful day we check in to our hotel in time before dinner. (B, D) Overnight Aria Hotel, Canberra

DAY 3 – Canberra Discovery War Memorial, Last Post

Of course, Canberra is the seat of Government in Australia. Today we have planned a tour of Parliament House – home of Australia’s Parliament and the meeting place of the nation.. Next is the Museum of Australian Democracy (formerly Old Parliament House). Today, this much-loved heritage building offers the visitor a unique glimpse into Australia’s fascinating past. The remainder of our afternoon will be at the Australian War Memorial.  The focus of the commemoration is the Hall of Memory together with the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, the Pool of Reflection and the Roll of Honour that lists the names of over 102,000 Australian servicemen and women who have died in war.  We stay to hear the Last Post and closing ceremony. DAY 4 – Canberra to Cowra

Today we are heading to Cowra, the town made famous by the POW Camp located here during WWII and the now famous “Cowra Breakout”.  A local guide joins the coach for our town tour.
We will also visit the Australian & Japanese War Cemeteries, which contains the graves of the Japanese involved in the POW Breakout during World War II. This is the only Japanese War Cemetery in Australia. We then visit the Cowra Japanese Gardens. Meandering paths and wooden bridges allow us to explore and view the gardens at ease.  The Cultural Centre displays Japanese art history and crafts and has become known as the centre of Japanese Culture in Australia. (B, D ) Overnight Sovereign Inn, Cowra

There is a maze, an oak forest and an 80 meter cascade that tumbles down the hillside, along with extensive parterre gardens. You really have to see it to believe it !!! We relax over lunch here and later this afternoon we’ll re-board the coach and head to the Blue Mountains and check into our hotel. (B, L, D) Overnight Comfort Inn Redleaf Resort
