Historical Sydney & WW2 Midget Subs

On the night of 31 May 1942 three Japanese midget submarines entered Sydney harbour. One became entangled in the boom net across the harbour, and her occupants blew her up. A second entered the harbour and fired torpedoes at the cruiser USS Chicago. They missed the Chicago but one hit the barracks ship HMAS Kuttabul, killing 21 naval ratings. This midget submarine disappeared, its fate a complete mystery until it was discovered by a group of amateur divers off Sydney’s northern beaches in November 2006. A third midget submarine also entered the harbour but was destroyed by depth-charges before it had fired any torpedoes.

This morning we travel to Hyde Park for a visit to the Hyde Park Barracks, built between 1818 and 1819, this popular landmark is located in Sydney’s historic precinct.  Constructed by  the convicts themselves, it provided lodgings for convicts working in government employment around Sydney until its closure in 1848.  It has had many occupants since then. It was an Immigration Depot from 1848 to 1886 and also a female asylum from 1862 to 1886. From 1887 to 1979 law courts and government offices were based at the Barracks.  Today we discover the daily lives of convicts and other occupants.
