The Majestic River Murray

It’s by far the largest river in Australia. It begins as a small stream in the Australian Alps and 2520 river kilometres later it empties into the Southern Ocean near Goolwa in South Australia. Along the way it meanders through contrasting Australian landscapes and river towns that record the history of what used to be the most important trade route in Australia. The Murray has also allowed the development of Australia’s most important irrigated region and is widely known as the food bowl of the nation. Our tour begins in Albury on the Victorian-New South Wales Border and ends near Goolwa in South Australia. Along the way we will visit historic river towns such as Echuca, Swan Hill and Mannum, see a number of the major river lakes and be entertained and informed by local characters who live by and are part of the history of the Majestic River Murray

DAY 4 – HISTORICAL ECHUCA PRIDE OF THE MURRAY CRUISE

This morning we discover the Echuca Port. Our guide will point out areas of interest and fill us with tales of the colourful people who “crewed” the old river boats. We have a chance to look through Sharps Magic Movie House & Penny Arcade. Lunch today is on the river aboard the Pride of the Murray. We then make our way to Lake Boga which is home to the famous Catalina Flying Boat A24-30 – one of only four in Australia. We make a stop at the Flying Boat Museum. From here we continue to Swan Hill for this evening. (B,L,D) Campbell Motor Inn Swan Hill

DAY 5 – SWAN HILL, EUSTON PIONEER SETTLEMENT, MILDURA

(B,L,D) Quality Mildura Grand Hotel

DAY 6 – MILDURA, RENMARK, PADDLE STEAMER CRUISE

This morning we transfer to the Mildura Wharf and board the PS Rothbury for a cruise on the Murray River. Built in 1891, the Rothbury was one of the last “working” paddlesteamers on the Murray River. Late morning we continue west along the Sturt Highway towards the South Australian Border and call in to the tiny village of Paringa. It’s here we have our morning stop at Lock 5. Navigating the Murray River wouldn’t be possible without the series of locks and weirs that were built back in the 1920s and 1930s. Fourteen locks are still in use today. We will enjoy a morning tea from the coach and take in some fantastic views of the river. We then cross the Paringa Suspension Bridge and drive into Renmark, then step aboard the Paddlesteamer PS Industry for our cruise. Commissioned in 1911, the Industry once worked for South Australian Water, keeping the Murray River open to traffic. We re-join the coach and drive through to Barmera in the South Australian Riverland – our base for the next three nights. (B,D) Barmera Country Club Motor Inn

DAY 7 – NAPPER BRIDGE BANROCK STATION, MONASH

Today we have planned a visit to the award winning Banrock Station near Kingston on Murray. We have arranged morning tea here overlooking the river. Our drive from here takes us over the Napper Bridge which crosses Chambers Creek and onto the historic Overland Corner Hotel. The hotel was built from sandstone cut from a nearby quarry in the 1870s. We enjoy lunch here before the drive back to Barmera. (B,L,D) Barmera Country Club Motor Inn

DAY 8 – HISTORIC RIVERLANDS

One of the other major Riverland towns is Loxton – and that is where we are off to this morning. Loxton on the Murray was first settled by people of (predominantly) German origin. This proud German heritage is still evident today. Much of the town’s fascinating history is on display at the Loxton Historical Village. For lunch we have some free time to take a look through the lovely river township of Berri before heading to nearby Glossop and a visit to Bella Lavender Estate. Afternoon tea with time to take a walk in the gardens before departing. Happy Hour in the restaurant is from 5pm !!!!!                     (B,D) Barmera Country Club Motor Inn

DAY 9 – BLANCHETOWN CRUISE, GOOLWA

This morning we travel to Waikerie and onto Blanchetown where we can see Lock 1 – the first of a series of seven locks on the Murray. The next town is Swan Reach and then Mannum. We continue to Goolwa where the Murray River finally enters the Southern Ocean. Here we board the “Spirit of the Coorong” for a luncheon cruise. The cruise takes us through the Goolwa Barrage, one of five constructed in the 1930s. After our cruise we transfer to Goolwa for our overnight stay.  (B,L,D)  Motel Goolwa

DAY 10 – ADELAIDE, HOME PORT

Unfortunately all good things must come to an end and we will make our way into Adelaide and connect with your return flight home under your own arrangments. We travelled nearly the entire length of the Murray River and discovered a fascinating insight into early colonial Australia and the vital role the Mighty Murray River played in development of this vast inland region of our continent.  Please arrange return flights from 1pm onwards.
