Included in this extensive tour of the region, is places like Herberton Historical Village, the amazing Undara Lava Tubes,  Georgetown and its mineral collection,  the 190 million year old Cobbold Gorge, Quirky Croydon, Remote  Karumba,  Mt Isa and its Mines,  Hughenden and its Dinosaurs  and last but not least, Charters Towers and its gold rush history.


Departing Brisbane on the Spirit of Queensland Train at 3.45pm in Premium Economy Seats, or  Deluxe Rail Beds (all meals included with Rail Beds). Making our way over night to Cairns

Note: Intestate and Overseas guests will arrive today at Brisbane Airport and transfer via Skytrain to Brisbane Train Station to join the Spirit of Queensland.

Waking for the breakfast service this morning on the train, we will pass through Townsville and then arriving in Cairns mid afternoon. You will be met by your Tour Host and  coach driver before being transferred to the motel,  with time to freshen up before enjoying a Welcome Dinner at 6pm.

Note: If not using the rail service, please arrive in Cairns today and make your way to the motel where check in will be arranged. We then ask that you meet the Tour Host and fellow guests in the restaurant for the welcome dinner.

Meals (D) Overnight Double Tree Hilton Cairns

Departing Cairns by our touring coach this morning, we visit the Herberton Historical Village. The Village has over 50 restored original buildings. Walking through the Village, visitors are given a sense of being in a Historical Township complete with chemist, school, bank, grocer’s store, a jail, mechanic and more, making this museum the most significant in Queensland. We then depart for Mt Surprise and our overnight stop.

This morning we discover a natural gem in the Gulf Savannah of Tropical North Queensland and visit Undara National Park for our guided tour of the amazing Lava Tubes formed by millions of years of volcanic eruptions. On the list of “must do” experiences, the tubes are one of the true wonders of Australia and reputedly the longest lava tubes in the world.

We then make our way to Forsayth and Cobbold Gorge Village for dinner this evening.

Our Gorge tour begins with an informative insight to the geology of the rugged sandstone formations, followed by a guided bushwalk to the top of the escarpment and a magnificent view of the gorge below. Then glide on custom-made, electric powered boats in almost eerie silence ensuring minimal disturbance to the wildlife. Following lunch, we depart for our nights stop in Georgetown and call into the Terrestrial Centre which is home to one of the largest mineral collections in the world.

Depart  this morning travelling through Croydon  for our tour of this very interesting outback town and on to Normanton for our lunch break before arriving in Karumba. This evening we will enjoy a cool drink at the aptly named “Sunset Tavern” while watching the amazing sunset over the Gulf of Carpentaria. This is one of the most unique sunsets in Australia. We then enjoy and Alfresco Reef N Beef dinner.

This morning we visit the amazing new  Barra Centre which offers an interpretive experience and is the only hatchery in the world that breeds the southern gulf barramundi. Some free time to enjoy Karumba before we board our Sunset Cruise. We cruise up to the Katoora wreck, spotting for crocs and wildlife then out to watch the sunset over the Gulf Waters enjoying prawns and nibbles along the way.

A Day on the Road today and we pass some very interesting outback locations and sites. Departing along the Burke Development Rd, we make our way south calling in to the Burke & Wills Road House for a break. Continuing on arriving into Mt Isa and checking into our accommodation for the next 2 nights

Outback at the Isa today and take part in the Hard Times Underground Mine Tour and Outback Park. We then visit the WW2 Underground Hospital and the Beth Anderson Museum. Following on with a tour of Mt Isa including the famed Lookout.

Hughenden is  part of Australia’s Dinosaur Trail and we visit “Hughie”, the seven metre-tall Muttaburrasaurus, and an impressive fossil collection at the Flinders Discovery Centre, which is also an accredited Information Centre.

Visiting Gold Rush Era Charters Towers, taking a step back in time and discover this enchanting outback town. Driving through the streets of Charters Towers is like viewing a living montage of Australian history and heritage. When gold was first discovered in Charters Towers in 1871, Charters Towers became a gold rush town and quickly grew to become the second largest town in Queensland. Today, the magnificent heritage buildings are testament to the prosperity of years past. Our day includes the Miners Cottage which houses a collection of goldfields memorabilia. We will also visit the Zara Clarke National Trust Museum. .

Meals (B, D)  Overnight Cattleman’s Rest Charters Towers

This morning we make our way into Townsville and visit to the iconic Castle Hill. A World War II observation bunker still sits on one corner of the Hill reminding visitors of Castle Hill’s military history.  We them make our way to the train station for your departure this afternoon.

Note: If not using the return train service, you tour completes in Townsville at 2pm.

Meals (B) Overnight Spirit of Queensland (All meals for Rail Beds)

Today the Spirit of Queensland Train will finish the journey arriving into Brisbane at 9.30am with cherished memories of the Best of the North West.

Note: Interstate and Overseas Guests will then transfer via Skytrain to Brisbane Airport to join your return flight Home.
