Waking for the breakfast service this morning on the train, we will pass through Townsville and then arriving in Cairns mid afternoon. You will be met by your Tour Host and coach driver before being transferred to the motel, with time to freshen up before enjoying a Welcome Dinner at 6pm.
Note: If not using the train service, please arrive in Cairns today and make your way to the motel where check in will be arranged. We then ask that you meet the Tour Host and fellow guests in the restaurant for the welcome dinner.

Departing Cairns by our touring coach this morning, we visit the Herberton Historical Village. The Village has over 50 restored original buildings. Walking through the Village, visitors are given a sense of being in a Historical Township complete with chemist, school, bank, grocer’s store, a jail, mechanic and more, making this museum the most significant in Queensland. We then depart for Mt Surprise and our overnight stop.

This morning we discover a natural gem in the Gulf Savannah of Tropical North Queensland and visit Undara National Park for our guided tour of the amazing Lava Tubes formed by millions of years of volcanic eruptions. On the list of “must do” experiences, the tubes are one of the true wonders of Australia and reputedly the longest lava tubes in the world.
We then make our way to Forsayth and Cobbold Gorge Village for dinner this evening.

Our Gorge tour begins with an informative insight to the geology of the rugged sandstone formations, followed by a guided bushwalk to the top of the escarpment and a magnificent view of the gorge below. Then glide on custom-made, electric powered boats in almost eerie silence ensuring minimal disturbance to the wildlife. Following lunch, we depart for our nights stop in Georgetown and call into the Terrestrial Centre which is home to one of the largest mineral collections in the world.

Depart this morning travelling through Croydon for our tour of this very interesting outback town and on to Normanton for our lunch break at a local Pub before arriving in Karumba. This evening we will enjoy a cool drink at the aptly named “Sunset Tavern” while watching the amazing sunset over the Gulf of Carpentaria. This is one of the most unique sunsets in Australia. We then enjoy and Alfresco Reef N Beef dinner.

This morning we visit the amazing new Barra Centre which offers an interpretive experience and is the only hatchery in the world that breeds the southern gulf barramundi. Some free time to enjoy Karumba before we board our Sunset Cruise. We cruise up to the Katoora wreck, spotting for crocs and wildlife then out to watch the sunset over the Gulf Waters enjoying prawns and nibbles along the way.

Departing along the Burke Development Rd, we make our way south calling in to the Burke & Wills Road House for a break. Continuing on arriving into Cloncurry, then visiting the Unearthed Museum with the star exhibit being Robert Burke’s (Burke and Wills) water bottle, along with the history and photos of their ill fated exploration.

Outback at the Isa today and take part in the Hard Times Underground Mine Tour and Outback Park. We then visit the WW2 Underground Hospital and the Beth Anderson Museum. Following on with a tour of Mt Isa including the famed Lookout.

Richmond is part of Australia’s Dinosaur Trail and Kronosaurus Korner is Australia’s premier marine fossil museum. It showcases nearly 1,150 unique fossil specimens found around the region. Fossils from the area include the 100-115 million year old remains of extinct marine reptiles, fishes, ammonites and squids.

Visiting Gold Rush Era Charters Towers, taking a step back in time and discover this enchanting outback town. Driving through the streets of Charters Towers is like viewing a living montage of Australian history and heritage. When gold was first discovered in Charters Towers in 1871, Charters Towers became a gold rush town and quickly grew to become the second largest town in Queensland. Today, the magnificent heritage buildings are testament to the prosperity of years past. Our day includes the Miners Cottage which houses a collection of goldfields memorabilia. We will also visit the Zara Clarke National Trust Museum. This evening we enjoy the Ghosts of Gold Heritage Movie, where the ghosts of the gold rush era tell their tales as evening settles in.

This morning we make our way into Townsville and visit to the iconic Castle Hill. A World War II observation bunker still sits on one corner of the Hill reminding visitors of Castle Hill’s military history. We them make our way to the train station for your departure this afternoon.

Today the Spirit of Queensland Train will finish the journey arriving into Brisbane at 9.30am with cherished memories of the Best of the North West.
