Hundreds of tiny footprints linking the sand dunes to the sea are a tell-tale sign of turtle hatch-lings starting their life at Mon Repos Beach, Bundaberg. A few months earlier, a mother turtle had dragged her large frame up the beach to above the high tide mark to carefully lay her eggs in the largest turtle rookery in the South Pacific. Witnessing this rare sight — a once a year dash to the water’s edge — is one of Queensland’s top animal encounters that you can experience in the Bundaberg region.
Today we depart for our 4-day break to see the Turtle hatchlings at Mon Repos. Departing Brisbane at 10am, our first stop at the Eumundi Markets. Here we can stretch our legs and purchase lunch if you wish, whilst having a look through the market stalls. This afternoon we drive through to Bundaberg, and check into our motel for the next 3 nights. This afternoon we will be visiting the Mon Repos Turtle Centre. Mon Repos is a very special place; it supports the largest concentration of nesting marine turtles on the eastern coast. Here we can learn about the Mon Repos Turtles and their colourful history. After our visit we return to our motel and have an early dinner, as we will be returning to the Turtle Centre this evening. Our ranger guide will talk us through the Turtle hatchlings, as they emerge from their nests and make their way to the water.
Note: As turtles can hatch at any time Mon Repos ranger staff cannot always guarantee a sighting. Remember – we are viewing wild animals in their natural environment! However, our tour has 3 nights and we have left each night open to ensure we see the turtles.
Meals (D) 3 nights Econo Lodge Park Lane, Bundaberg
This morning we head into Bundaberg where we’ll join the Bundy Belle for a cruise along the beautiful Burnett River. From aboard this fully restored classic river ferry, we will see the bulk sugar terminal, the trawlers unloading their catch at the seafood processing plants and the Bundaberg marina. We’ll enjoy the tranquillity of the river’s lower reaches as we sit in comfort in the cabin or out on the deck. We have some time to purchase lunch before we visit Bundaberg Barrel Brewed Drinks. We take a look at the True Brew Experience Tour, which has interactive touch screens showing us how the ginger root is transformed into the delicious Ginger Beer produced. We have a chance to sample some of their 14 flavours and of course there will be time to make purchases of our favorites before we head back to the motel in time for dinner and another Turtle viewing if required.
Meals (B, D)
This morning we arrive at the Botanic Gardens and visit the Hinkler Hall of Aviation, dedicated to the life of the famous aviator Bert Hinkler. This iconic Australian spirit has been rolled out of the production line for 110 years and today we are here for a guided tour. We’ll be able to look, feel and taste our way through the making process starting with the raw material molasses to the aromas of maturing spirit. Before returning to the motel in time for dinner and another Turtle viewing if required.
