Gulflander & Savannahlander Adventure

The Gulf of Carpentaria is enclosed on the west by Arnhem Land and on the east by the Cape York Peninsula. Prawn fishing developed rapidly in the gulf from the late 1960s. The town of Karumba, located at the south eastern end of the gulf, is a centre of the prawn fishing industry. Banana prawns are the major catch. Great Value Holidays has created a tour that takes in this region along with the much loved trains the Gulflander and Savannahlander, that help open up this remote country for all to see.

DAY 2 – Arrive Cairns

Arriving in Cairns mid afternoon. You will then be meet by our friendly Tour Host and transferred to Cairns Queenslander with time to freshen up before enjoying dinner (B, L, D)

DAY 3 – Cairns to Georgetown

This morning we depart by coach on our journey across the Atherton Tablelands arriving in Ravenshoe mid morning. Ravenshoe boasts the highest pub in Qld . We will pass through Mt Surprise then travelling further inland stopping at Georgetown where we will visit the Terrestrial Centre which houses one of the largest mineral collections in the world. DAY 4 – Croydon to Karumba Outback by the Sea

Depart after breakfast this morning travelling through Croydon for our town tour and on to Normanton as we follow the Gulflander train line. We will then arrive in Karumba this afternoon .This evening we will enjoy an alfresco beachfront Dinner while overlooking the Gulf of Carpentaria watching the sunset. DAY 5 – Normoton to Forsayth, Gulflander Train, Cobbold Gorge

This morning we will transfer from Karumba to Normanton Railway Station. Take a journey aboard the legendary Gulflander for a rail journey unlike any other. Also known as the ‘Tin Hare’, this legendary rail motor is one of the last great characters of the rail world. From wetlands and grasslands to arid Savannah territory, the Gulflander travels through countryside that most people will never see. This nostalgic rail journey is the perfect way to discover an area steeped in pioneering history and heritage. Normanton was the port for the Croydon Gold Rush and is a terminus of the Normanton Railway Station which features preserved Victorian architecture. On our ride, enjoy a stop at Blackbull Siding for morning tea, before arriving into Croydon. We board the coach again for Forsayth and Cobbold Gorge. (B,D) Cobbold Gorge Village / Finnegan’s Rest

DAY 6 – Day at the Gorge & Cruise

Following breakfast this morning you will be amazed as you delve into a geological process which began some 1700 million years ago. This is an unforgettable highlight of your trip to outback Queensland. The tour begins with an informative insight to the geology of the rugged sandstone formations, followed by a guided bushwalk to the top of the escarpment. It’s a relatively easy walk with the reward of a magnificent view of the gorge below. Then glide on custom-made, electric powered boats in almost eerie silence ensuring minimal disturbance to the wildlife. There’s every chance of seeing one of the large population of resident freshwater crocodiles. (B,D) Overnight Cobbold Gorge / Finnegan’s Rest

DAY 7 – Savannahlander, Mt Surprise Undara Lava Tubes

The Savannahlander (Silver Bullet) travels between Forsayth & Mt Surprise, giving passengers one of the great rail experiences of the world through the Outback. We will transfer to the Savannahlander then stopping at Einasleigh with time to purchase lunch at the pub if you wish before travelling through to Mount Surprise. We will then depart for Undara Lava Lodge for our tour of the Lava Tubes.

DAY 8 – Kuranda Scenic Railway

After our bush breakfast at the Ringers Camp we will depart and meet the Kuranda Scenic Railway for our Gold Class Train ,travelling through lush tropical greenery to Cairns (B,D) Overnight Cairns Queenslander Cairns

DAY 9 – Depart Cairns

This morning following breakfast we will depart on the Spirit of Queensland travelling to our home destination enjoying the company of your new found friends. (B) Overnight Spirit of Qld Train (clients in Rail Beds all meals included)

DAY 10 – Arrival Home

Today the Spirit of Queensland will finish the journey arriving into Brisbane with cherished memories of both the Australian Outback and the vast Gulf Region of Australia.
